The Master Password is a password that only you know and that is requested throughout the product for different purposes:
-
To decrypt the encrypted data stored in your Managers. This is its main purpose and the reason why it was created in the first place. Only your Master Password can perform this task.
-
To unlock the Main Menu or launch the mobile app if you choose to add this as an extra layer of security from the Settings.
Note
Encryption is a process that converts human-readable plain text into ciphertext. Ciphertext is text that can only be read and used if the security keys used to convert the text from plaintext to ciphertext are known.
Encrypted data is secured data that can’t be read without your Master Password to decrypt it. It includes all of your passwords, which are automatically encrypted, and any data you decide to encrypt in your Data Manager.
You’ll need to create a Master Password before you can use the Password Manager or if you want to encrypt any piece of data in your Data Manager. For security reasons, it should be different from your Pocket Geek Privacy account password.
As we do not store it in any way, and since you are its only guardian, make sure to keep your Master Password safe and not lose it or you wouldn’t be able to decrypt any of your encrypted data (including your passwords). If you do forget it, you’ll need to recover or reset it.
Tip
If you’ve forgotten your Master Password and you have a recovery code, you can go to “My Account” and use the recovery code to change your Master Password without losing any of your encrypted data. If you use the mobile app and have your Master Password linked to your fingerprint or Touch ID / Face ID, you can go to your mobile device to recover your Master Password via biometric authentication.
If you don’t have a recovery code and don’t have your Master Password linked to your fingerprint, you’ll have to go to “My Account” and reset it.
